Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson was seen wearing a shirt with a design of WNBA legend Dawn Staley’s unreleased SLAM cover. The All-Star center made her way to the locker room as she prepared to play against the Minnesota Lynx.
She arrived in style as she gave a sneak peek of the head coach’s cover for SLAM magazine with her shirt, paying tribute to the Hall of Fame player.
Staley played for the Charlotte Sting for seven seasons where she emerged as one of the best point guards in history. She was also a four-time All-Star with the team and averaged 8.9 points, two rebounds and 5.4 assists. The star played for the Houston Comets in 2005 and 2006, where she earned her fifth and final All-Star appearance.
The 5-foot-6 guard was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012 and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame the following year. Staley is currently the head coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks Women’s basketball team and has been named Naismith Coach of the Year four times.
A’ja Wilson was excited to film the new Gatorade ad that featured Michael Jordan
Wilson was part of the elite roster of athletes that was included in the new Gatorade’s “Is It In You?” campaign. She was featured alongside Indiana Fever’s rookie Caitlin Clark, track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway and Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum.
The new Gatorade ad was 60 seconds long and was narrated by Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. Wilson couldn’t hold her excitement when the brand told her about the concept that they were going with.
“I can’t even voice to you how I’m so excited that we’re taking it back to the vintage, like the old school, the ones that we really grew up on,” Wilson tells SLAM. “Being a 90s kid, growing up and seeing MJ, seeing all the other athletes, and now to finally be in it and be a part of a commercial that I used to watch, and now I’m going to be a part of the family as a whole, it’s been super exciting.”
Wilson has had a strong start to the WNBA season. She is averaging 25.5 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game for the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.
