South Africaâs Eben Etzebeth says the Irish media âdefinitely targeted meâ after he accused Ireland of being âarrogantâ following last yearâs World Cup pool match between the sides.
Speaking in April, Springbok lock Etzebeth said âprobably 12â of the 23 players in Irelandâs squad said âsee you guys in the finalâ after the Irish won the Pool B encounter 13-8.
Ireland, however, fell to New Zealand in the quarter-final again while South Africa went on to retain the World Cup, beating the All Blacks in the final.
When asked about his comments on Tuesday, before Saturdayâs Test against Ireland in Pretoria, Etzebeth stood by his remarks.
âLook, I said what I said,â said the two-time World Cup winner.

âIt was after the game and I see a lot of them said âhow could I count exactly that amount?â.
âYou just give an estimate because it was definitely not less than six or seven, it wasnât more than 20 of them. I just gave an estimate.â
Etzebeth, who started last yearâs pool game in Paris, added: âI said what I said. Weâll never after a game tell a team âweâll see you in the finalâ if thereâs so much rugby still to be played.
âMaybe that was their way to say they think weâre a good side and âwe might make it all the way throughâ, but people definitely interpreted that a bit wrong and took it a bit out of context.â
âIreland probably have unfinished businessâ
Etzebeth was speaking after being named in a strong South Africa side that includes 12 World Cup winners for the first Test against Ireland at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.
While South Africa are back-to-back World Cup winners, they have lost their past three encounters with Ireland.
Ireland, however, have never won a series in South Africa.
âFrom their side, they probably have unfinished business to try and get number one [in the world],â said Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus.
âWe donât talk like that. We analyse players, we see how they perform in the URC [United Rugby Championship] and European Cup, then pick our team from players we think can do the job for us.
âWe train really hard. We try to stay in our reality but our reality is weâre playing at home against a team that has beaten us. All the games were really close, they deserved all of those.â
Former World Rugby coach of the year Erasmus added: âBut itâs never âweâve got a score to settleâ. Iâd rather take a World Cup, two World Cups and a British and Irish Lions series, and take the three losses.â
