Former Argentina defender Javier Mascherano has heaped praise on reported Real Madrid target Cristian Romero. He hailed the Tottenham Hotspur star as one of the best defenders in the world.
Romero has been one of the main factors in Argentina’s brilliance in recent years, which has seen them win three trophies. He has helped them keep 26 clean sheets in 33 appearances, winning 25 games and conceding just 11 goals. He has helped keep two clean sheets at the ongoing Copa America 2024.
Mascherano recently lauded Romero, who has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, as per ESPN Argentina. He said (via All About Argentina):
“Cuti Romero is among the best center-backs in the world, if he’s not the best already. We don’t know what his ceiling is. He has demonstrated it throughout the entire season at Tottenham. He has been a cornerstone player for the team, incredibly important, and the Tottenham coach has repeatedly praised him in big matches.
“I believe he is at an incredible level, a player with impressive abilities who continues to grow and improve. The level he is reaching is impressive.”
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 on a season-long loan before the move was made permanent the following year. While he had inconsistent performances in the first few seasons, he was exceptional last season under Ange Postecoglou.
When Lionel Messi hailed Real Madrid target as best in the world
Lionel Messi had also hailed reported Real Madrid target Cristian Romero as the best defender in the world. After their 1-0 win over Ecuador in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers last year, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said (via 90min):
“For me, [Cristian Romero] is the best defender in the world right now. Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”
Messi and Romero have shared the pitch 29 times with Argentina, losing just twice.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Romero after parting ways with Nacho Fernandez. Moreover, David Alaba also suffered an ACL injury last season and is 22 years old now.
However, as per journalist Ben Jacobs, Tottenham will not sell their vice-captain this summer even for an offer of around £80 million. His contract with the north London side expires in 2027.
