Biden ‘bows out’ and ‘quits the race’
One story dominates the front pages this morning: Joe Biden stepping out of the race for the White House. The Guardian highlights the US president’s comments that him quitting is in the best interests of the US and the Democrats.
The Daily Mail’s headline asks if Vice President Kamala Harris will be the next president of the United States. Democrats were rushing to crown Ms Harris as Joe Biden’s successor after he dramatically ended his campaign, it says.
The Financial Times says the “historic decision” by Biden puts Kamala Harris in unchartered territory.
As part of its coverage of the story, the Daily Express front page carries reaction from Republican nominee Donald Trump, who called Joe Biden the “worst president in the history of the US”. “Drama in race for White House,” says a headline.
President Biden “bows to pressure and ditches election campaign”, says the Times. It reports there was mounting pressure from the Democratic Party to pass the torch to a younger generation.
As well as reporting Joe Biden’s decision, the Daily Telegraph runs an opinion piece on its front page, suggesting the Democrats “were reckless and cruel in paving the way to such a disaster”. They effected a coup, but not before damaging the party’s brand, writes Tim Stanley.
“Biden quits” is the headline on the i, with the paper saying a growing rebellion had left him with “no option”.
“Biden bows out”, says the Metro. It reports the president says he will speak to the US later this week in more detail about his decision.
And the Daily Star references one of the digs Donald Trump used against President Biden in its headline, calling him Sleepy Joe. Biden responded to this nickname by calling Trump “a clown”.
The news about Joe Biden is on the Daily Mirror’s front page. But the paper opts to lead with a report about a private care home for vulnerable children that has been shut after claims of physical abuse.
