Police van set alight as protest breaks out in Southport
A police van has been set on fire during a protest just hours after a vigil took place following a knife attack in which three children were killed.
The protest began just a few streets away from that vigil location, near to a mosque on St Luke’s Road in Southport.
Merseyside Police said an officer suffered a suspected broken nose and police vehicles had been damaged and set alight in the disturbances at about 19:45 BST.
A force spokesperson said “a large group of people – believed to be supporters of the English Defence League – began to throw items towards a local mosque on St Luke’s Road in Southport”.
