Jacob Rees-Moggâs son, 16, âwas sent hate mailâ
Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has revealed that his 16-year-old son received hate mail after Julyâs general election.
Speaking to an Edinburgh Festival Fringe audience on Sunday, Sir Jacob said it was an âawful thing to doâ and âfundamentally nastyâ.
He also said he is âvery stronglyâ considering standing at the next general election after losing the newly-created North East Somerset and Hanham seat to Labour â however he added he was not âabsolutely certainâ.
Sir Jacob said: âTo write to a 16-year-old is just loathsome.â
He added: âIt is not my sonâs fault that I have the political views that I do and it is cowardly [to write to him]. If you donât agree with me then you should get in touch with me â put your name on the bottom of it.â
The former Tory minister, who lost by more than 5,000 votes to Labourâs Dan Norris at the 4 July ballot, said his party âdeservedâ to lose the election.
Sir Jacob added that losing his seat was not a âshockâ and he wrote to his children the day before the election saying he will âprobably loseâ.
âI tried my best to warn them that I was going to lose my seat,â he said.
âWe governed badly, we hadnât done what we told people we would do.
â We put up taxes when we said that we wouldnât, we hadnât dealt with migration and we hadnât governed well.
âI canât pretend we didnât deserve it.â
