Caitlin Clark’s historic rookie campaign with the Indiana Fever continues as the regular season winds to a close. She has broken several WNBA and franchise records but is not done yet. After the Fever’s game against the Washington Mystics on Thursday, she could add a few more to her tally.
Indiana has clinched the No. 6 seed in the playoffs, so coach Christie Sides might limit Clark’s minutes. If that happens, a few records could be safe from her onslaught.
Records Caitlin Clark could own after the Fever’s final regular-season game
#3 Indiana Fever record for most free throws made in a season
Indiana Fever legend Tamika Catchings made 165 free throws in 2006, the most in franchise history. After Monday’s game against the Dallas Wings, Caitlin Clark has 161, five more freebies from breaking the 18-year-old mark.
The rookie is averaging 4.1 free throw makes this season, so surpassing Catchings could be possible if she’s more aggressive in looking for her shots.
#2 Indiana Fever record for most points in a season
Perhaps the biggest and most interesting sub-headline for the Fever franchise will be the points battle between two of their best bucket-getters. Kelsey Mitchell’s 763 points this year are the best in Fever history, while Caitlin Clark is a close second with 761.
Mitchell set the previous mark last year with 728, but with Clark running the point, she has had more opportunities to score. It might be the record the Indiana rookie might not be interested in getting, though.
#1 WNBA single-season record for most 3-pt FGs made
Everyone will pay close attention to Caitlin Clark’s 3-point shooting on Thursday against the Washington Mystics.
She has 120 triples this season, eight less than the record Sabrina Ionescu set last season. Clark is averaging 3.1 3-point makes this season, so it will be a tall task for the Fever rookie to even tie the New York Liberty star’s feat.
Second place on the list is Diana Taurasi, who had 121 trifectas in 2006. This seems to be the figure Clark is closest to breaking.
If Caitlin Clark breaks Ionescu’s single-season record, she will also join another set of record-holders. Only Jewell Loyd and Kelsey Mitchell have hit nine 3-pointers in one game.
Clark has been on a historic tear. If she sinks nine 3-pointers on Thursday, she might also break Mitchell’s franchise record for most points in a season. The basketball world can’t wait for the Fever-Mystics tip-off.
