PV Sindhu has managed to keep India’s hopes of a title at the Denmark Open alive after a thrilling, marathon pre-quarterfinal win. The shuttler took down world No. 7, China’s Han Yue over three games and remains the only Indian standing in Odense.
For Sindhu, this victory will ignite hopes of a return to her winning ways. The 29-year-old has struggled with her form over the past couple of years, and this is the first time she’s managed to get the better of a top-10 player in nearly five months.
The two-time Olympic medalist returned empty-handed from the Paris Games and took a brief break from the sport. She made a return to the BWF World Tour circuit last week at the Indonesia Open but was shown the door in the opening round.
PV Sindhu has fared better at the Denmark Open. She was leading Pai Yu Po in her first-round match before the latter retired due to a knee injury. Coming into her clash against Han Yue, the Indian was pegged as the underdog, and Yue proved exactly why as she claimed the first game 21-18.
However, in a display of her trademark never-say-never attitude, Sindhu clawed her way back into the match, forcing a decider and eventually emerging victorious 18-21, 21-12, 21-16.
BWF Denmark Open 2024: PV Sindhu likely to face Gregoria Mariska Tunjung next
After her victorious outing against fourth seed Han Yue at the Denmark Open, PV Sindhu will likely run into Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the quarterfinals of the Super 750. The Indonesian youngster has had a strong 2024, clinching bronze at the Paris Olympics.
As of now, Tunjung is set to battle home favorite Mia Blichfeldt in her Round-of-16 match but remains a heavy favorite for the win. The Indonesian will face Sindhu if she beats Blichfeldt.
