The final DP World Tour event of the season is here: The DP World Tour Championship. Last week, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship cut the field down to 50, who will compete for the title this weekend. It functions similarly to the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour except that there’s only one week of playoffs beforehand.
With a new champion potentially being named this Sunday, it’s worth looking back at the past champions. The list of players who’ve won this tournament is a bit of a who’s who of golfers.
Revisiting previous DP World Tour Championship winners
Last year, Nicolai Hojgaard won the DP World Tour Championship. He shot -21, which was two strokes ahead of Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, and Matt Wallace.
In 2022, Jon Rahm won the third of his titles in this event. His -20 was two ahead of Alex Noren and Tyrrell Hatton. In 2021, Collin Morikawa took home the trophy. He was 17 under par and three strokes ahead of Alexander Bjork and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Matt Fitzpatrick shot -15 under in 2020. That was enough to beat Lee Westwood by one stroke. The year before, Rahm was the winner. At -19, he was one ahead of Fleetwood.
2018’s champion was Danny Willett. He was -18 and two ahead of Patrick Reed and Matt Wallace. Rahm’s first DP World Tour Championship win came in 2017 when he shot -19. That was enough to beat Shane Lowry and Kiradech Aphibarnrat by one stroke on the final leaderboard.
Fitzpatrick won the DP World Tour Championship in 2016. He was 17-under and one above Hatton on the final leaderboard. In 2015, Rory McIlroy took home the trophy. A -21 scorecard was enough to top Andy Sullivan by one.
Finally, Henrik Stenson’s -16 in 2014 beat McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Victor Dubuisson by two strokes. It was the second consecutive win for Stenson.
Past winners of DP World Tour Championship:
- 2023: Nicolai Hojgaard, -21
- 2022: Jon Rahm, -20
- 2021: Collin Morikawa, -17
- 2020: Matt Fitzpatrick, -15
- 2019: Jon Rahm, -19
- 2018: Danny Willett, -18
- 2017: Jon Rahm, -19
- 2016: Matt Fitzpatrick, -17
- 2015: Rory McIlroy, -21
- 2014: Henrik Stenson, -16
Rahm is the only player in DP World Tour history to win this event three times. Unfortunately, he’s not in the field this weekend, so he doesn’t have the chance to extend his record.
Other multi-time champions include McIlroy, Stenson, and Fitzpatrick. Stenson won’t be in the field, either, but McIlroy will be. Defending champion Hojgaard will not be in the field, but others who’ve won before will have a chance to join those with two or more titles, though.
