Liverpool have reportedly struck an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, who was previously linked with a move to Real Madrid. Writing for Sky Sports Switzerland, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has claimed that Frimpong has given his approval for a move to Anfield.
The reputed journalist has claimed that Frimpong has everything it takes to fit Arne Slot’s system at Liverpool. He also insisted that the Dutchman’s game could significantly improve under his compatriot at Anfield. Tavolieri said, as quoted by Four Four Two:
“[Frimpong’s] attacking football fits perfectly with Arne Slot’s philosophy, whose game requires effective input from the flanks to unbalance opposing defences.”
Tavolieri added:
“At only 23 years old, the Dutchman has a lot of room for improvement, which the ‘Slot Touch’ could further improve.”
Frimpong has been exceptional for Bayer Leverkusen following his reported £11.5 million move from Celtic in 2021. The Dutchman has particularly enjoyed his best form since Xabi Alonso took over at the BayArena.
In 161 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, the bombarding right-back has produced 27 goals and 39 assists thus far. Out of this, 23 goals and 28 assists have been under Alonso in 102 appearances.
Frimpong played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s fantastic season last time out as they won both the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal undefeated. Only a 3-0 defeat against Atalanta in the Europa League final prevented them from going unbeaten in all competitions.
Liverpool face the prospect of losing their star right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold next summer. The 26-year-old has his current deal at Anfield expiring in June and has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Losing a uniquely gifted player like Alexander-Arnold would be a major setback for the Reds but someone like Frimpong could be a solid replacement. Alexander-Arnold has made 326 appearances for his boyhood club till date, scoring 19 times while producing 83 assists.
Liverpool legend claims the Reds won’t miss Trent Alexander-Arnold if he joins Real Madrid
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has claimed that Trent Alexander-Arnold won’t be missed by the Reds if he joins Real Madrid. The England international’s future at Anfield has been up in the air for a while now with his deal up for expiry in June 2025.
The Reds vice-captain will be allowed to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in January ahead of a free transfer in the summer. With Real Madrid heavily linked with his signature, Mark Lawrenson believes that Arne Slot’s side will still be good without the creative full-back.
The former Republic of Ireland international, who won 13 trophies during his seven-year spell at Anfield, said (via Football 365):
“Conor Bradley has done well and that’s because he’s playing with plenty of freedom. Unfortunately for him, he knows that when Trent Alexander-Arnold is back from injury, he’ll go straight into the team, meaning that Bradley isn’t under any pressure when he plays.”
He added:
“If Trent leaves Liverpool in the summer, the club would be absolutely fine with their replacements as they’ve got Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez, who are both great players.”
Apart from Real Madrid target Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Merseyside giants could also lose Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. The two superstars are also set to enter the final six months of their deals with the club.
