England forward Chloe Kelly says she wants “to be happy again” as she seeks a move away from Manchester City before Thursday’s transfer window deadline.

Kelly, who has started only one Women’s Super League game for City this season, said that she wants to put herself in the best position to represent her country as the Lionesses aim to defend their European Championship title this summer.

It is understood that Manchester City are open to allowing the 27-year-old to leave and that the player is considering an offer.

The WSL transfer window closes at 23:00 GMT on Thursday, 30 January.

With her City contract expiring in June, Kelly said she has “accepted my future is not at this club beyond then”.

In an Instagram message posted little more than 24 hours before Thursday’s deadline, Kelly wrote: “With the Euros fast approaching, this summer is a huge one and I want to be in a position to give it my best shot to represent my country.

“However, to be dictated whom I can and can’t join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career by my mental wellbeing.

“The situation has been dragged on for too long, it’s disappointing and not right.”

Kelly scored the winning goal against Germany when England created history by winning their first major women’s tournament at Euro 2022.

She said she could not “control someone’s negative behaviour” towards her as she sought to clarify her position on Wednesday night – although she did not name any individual.

Her only WSL start this season came against West Ham back in October.

“I’m at a pivotal point in my life and my career is so important to me. [It] is very disappointing that the sport we love can make you feel this way especially after there’s been so much growth in our sport,” Kelly said.

“I am human and I have and will give everything to the game that I love.

“Ultimately, I just want to be happy again.”
