âOldest horseâ thrives on linseed cake and light exercise

Thereâs no better way for the horse believed to be the oldest in the UK to celebrate her 46th birthday in County Down.
A cake made of linseed mash and grass pellets, with a middle layer of grated carrot.
Roana and her stablemates, Tinkerbell and Barnaby, seemed to thoroughly appreciate the treat from Roanaâs owner Cerys Brown.
Cerys has had a close bond with Roana for more than three decades
She was six years old when she first saddled up with the pony at a riding school.
âI canât imagine life without her, âsaid Cerys.
âI just know her inside out, she knows me inside out, weâve grown up together.
âSheâs always there, sheâs always been there. Sheâs my best friend.â
She rode Roana at competitive show-jumping events in the 1990s.
Cerys joked that at first, Roana âwasnât very fond of small childrenâ.
âBut I was always the kid with treats in my pockets, and Roana likes treats. Thatâs how I won her around.â

When the riding school closed during the next decades, Cerysâs grandmother bought the mixed-breed pony for her.
Roana has lived at her stables in County Down ever since.
Cerys is often asked about the secret of Roanaâs longevity.
âI think a lot of it is good care, and good feeding. Sheâs had lots of exercise but not too much, so she has good joints.
âAnd also, good genetics,â she added.
Roana has cantered through all the significant events in Cerysâs life â even attending her wedding.

Sheâs been a help during more difficult times too.
Cerys was diagnosed with Crohnâs disease when she was 18 years old.
She said that having Roana and another horse at the time gave her âthe drive to get well again.â
âIt just gave me a reason to get up and out in the morning.â
Cerys described Roanaâs personality as âthranâ â which is a word often used in Northern Ireland to mean âstubbornâ.
âRoana knows her own mind,â she explained.
âShe does what she wants when she pleases.
âI run to her schedule as opposed to the other way round.
âBut sheâs great fun, she has such a zest for lifeâŠand even at age 46, sheâs not slow. She just wants to be out having fun.â
Roana emerged as the frontrunner in the race to be the UKâs oldest horse in a survey by the equestrian specialists Harry Hall.
Managing Director Liz Hopper said the relationship between Cerys and Roana was a âbeautiful partnershipâ.
âHorses are living longer due to advancements in nutrition and medicine,â she explained.
âWe are witnessing them surpassing expectations of the average age â which is around 25.â
Cerys said she hadnât previously thought that Roana could be a record-holder.
âIf horses get to their late 20s or early 30s, itâs great.
âForty-six is an incredible age.
âBut just because sheâs always been there, I never really thought Roana could be the oldest.
âSheâs just my Roana.â
