‘Hug of hope’ and ‘billions for Kyiv and UK defence’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with Sir Keir Starmer at Downing Street features on most of Sunday’s front pages. “Hug of hope,” reads the main headline on Sunday People’s front page, alongside an image of Sir Keir and Zelensky embracing.
The prime minister offered Zelensky the UK’s “full support”, the Sunday Mirror says, after US President Donald Trump clashed with the Ukrainian president during a meeting at the White House.
Starmer told Zelensky he was “very welcome here in Downing Street”, the Sunday Telegraph reports. The PM also reassured him of “our absolute determination to stand with you”, in comments that marked contrast to the heated exchange which unfolded in the Oval Office on Friday, the paper says.
The Daily Mail reports on public figures calling for Trump’s state visit to Britain be shelved in the wake of his meeting with Zelenksy. Politicians and military leaders say the visit should be put on hold until the US president makes assurances about Ukraine’s security, the paper says.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Times reports Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a multibillion-pound funding package to boost British defence and arm Ukraine. Speaking ahead of a meeting of European leaders today, Reeves says: “A safe and secure Ukraine is a safe and secure United Kingdom”. The funding will put Ukraine in “the strongest possible position”, she adds.
“Now’s the time for allies to unite for peace,” reads the front page of the Sunday Express. Starmer called for unity with Ukraine during Zelensky’s visit, as he attempted to save peace talks from collapsing, the paper reports.
And finally, UK racing fans could save a fortune by flying to Benidorm to watch the Cheltenham festival, according to the Daily Star Sunday.
