Enzo Fernandez’s wife Valentina Cervantes has spoken about their life before the midfielder won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina in Qatar. Fernandez impressed at River Plate after coming through the youth system, quickly getting called up to the Argentina national team in 2021.
He left River Plate and moved to Benfica in the summer of 2022. By that winter, he was part of the Albiceleste squad that lifted the World Cup alongside Lionel Messi. Soon after, he was heavily linked with a move to a European juggernaut, and he ended up joining Chelsea only six months after getting to Europe.
However, before all the fame from the World Cup, things were quite different, as Valentina Cervantes explains. She talked about life before 2022 and living with their daughter, who was born in 2020 (via Albiceleste Talk):
“When Olivia was born, we lived in a studio apartment in Urquiza, which Enzo’s agent paid for. During the pandemic, the three of us were there, and I worked at a call center, while Enzo didn’t have a salary yet. At that time, we bought our daughter’s clothes second-hand on Marketplace.”
“We used to take the bus; Enzo would get off at General Paz and take another to River Plate, and I would continue to the Urquiza station because I worked downtown at an empanada shop, and then at the call center near the Obelisk.”
She concluded:
“Today, three years later, our son is born, and it is a completely different reality…”
It certainly is a different reality, with Enzo Fernandez reportedly racking up an annual salary of $15,470,000 while at Stamford Bridge.
Enzo Fernandez slams Chelsea for keeping him from Olympics chance with Argentina
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has publicly slammed the club for keeping him from playing for Argentina at the Olympics in Paris. The Blues seemed to have accepted his decision to play in the tournament earlier, but they have gone back on it.
The 23-year-old, who is currently on international duty at the Copa America, has spoken about the situation. After the Albiceleste’s win over Chile, he revealed that he would not be allowed to partake in the Olympics (via Football Transfers):
“I did everything possible. Mauricio [Pochettino] was at Chelsea before, he had given me the OK. Then, there was a change of coach and the club changed their position. I tried, I kept talking, I did everything possible to be there, but it wasn’t doable.”
He continued:
“I apologise to Masche [Olympic coach Javier Mascherano]. I wanted to be there. It won’t happen. Hopefully, at another time I will be given the opportunity.”
In the meantime, though, Enzo Fernandez will hope to keep impressing and help Argentina win the Copa America this year.
