Biden âbows outâ and âquits the raceâ
One story dominates the front pages this morning: Joe Biden stepping out of the race for the White House. The Guardian highlights the US presidentâs comments that him quitting is in the best interests of the US and the Democrats.
The Daily Mailâs headline asks if Vice President Kamala Harris will be the next president of the United States. Democrats were rushing to crown Ms Harris as Joe Bidenâs successor after he dramatically ended his campaign, it says.
The Financial Times says the âhistoric decisionâ by Biden puts Kamala Harris in unchartered territory.
As part of its coverage of the story, the Daily Express front page carries reaction from Republican nominee Donald Trump, who called Joe Biden the âworst president in the history of the USâ. âDrama in race for White House,â says a headline.
President Biden âbows to pressure and ditches election campaignâ, says the Times. It reports there was mounting pressure from the Democratic Party to pass the torch to a younger generation.
As well as reporting Joe Bidenâs decision, the Daily Telegraph runs an opinion piece on its front page, suggesting the Democrats âwere reckless and cruel in paving the way to such a disasterâ. They effected a coup, but not before damaging the partyâs brand, writes Tim Stanley.
âBiden quitsâ is the headline on the i, with the paper saying a growing rebellion had left him with âno optionâ.
âBiden bows outâ, says the Metro. It reports the president says he will speak to the US later this week in more detail about his decision.
And the Daily Star references one of the digs Donald Trump used against President Biden in its headline, calling him Sleepy Joe. Biden responded to this nickname by calling Trump âa clownâ.
The news about Joe Biden is on the Daily Mirrorâs front page. But the paper opts to lead with a report about a private care home for vulnerable children that has been shut after claims of physical abuse.
