Tiger Woods is back at the Open Championship and is looking better and stronger during his practice. However, fans online felt the win was still a far cry.
Tiger Woods is in Royal Troon in Scotland for the Open Championship 2024, which will be played from Thursday, July 18 to Sunday, July 21. He is a three-time winner at the oldest major.
On Wednesday, July 17, TW Legion, a popular Tiger Woods tracking account on X, shared a video of the golfer’s practice ahead of the Open Championship.
“Tiger is looking stronger and his swing seems better compared to the last couple of majors,” TW Legion wrote. “A good sign for the future!
However, fans online had mixed reactions to the observations. While some were optimistic about Tiger’s performance, many believed it was wishful thinking.
Here’s a look at some reactions:
“Wishful thinking at its best,” one fan wrote.”
“He will make the cut,” another fan wrote.
“We’ve seen many similar tournament previews from the TW Camp during the past two years. Let’s judge his fitness & readiness to play during tournament competition, not practice,” this fan opined.
“It is absolutely a good sign,” another user commented. “But I also believe, as do many others, that he also needs to get into good enough shape to play in other events than just the majors so that he can get enough reps in tournament conditions. Maybe by next year, hoping?
“The confusing part to me is that he looks perfectly fine but can’t play in just 1 or 2 warmup tournaments leading into a major? It’s like showing up for a final without attending any classes,” one user wrote.
“Go look at his last 10 event finishes. Nearly last place (and last place in one of them). Missed cuts and DNF’s. It’s brutal. And hate to watch it. It’s over and been over for a while. I love Tiger but he’s just tarnishing his legacy at this point and I hate to say it,” another fan posted.
When will Tiger Woods tee off at the Open Championship Round 1?
Tiger Woods is grouped with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay for the first two rounds of the Open Championship. They will begin their week from the first tee on Thursday, July 18 at 9:37 am ET for the opening round. The trio will start the second round on Friday at 4:25 am ET.
Woods has played four events this season and made just one cut at the Masters Tournament. He has missed two straight cuts at the PGA Championship and the US Open respectively. He had indicated that the Open Championship would be his last official tournament this season. It will be interesting to see how he closes the season.
