Pensioner barred from Butlinâs weekday solo visit

An East Sussex pensioner said he was âgobsmackedâ to find out he was barred from visiting his favourite Butlinâs resort during the week because he was going alone.
Malcom, 85 and from Patcham, said he rang the company inquiring about a few nights on his own at its Skegness site, but he was told solo travellers are only welcome at weekends.
He said he was particularly upset as he and his family had been going there for years.
In a statement, Butlinâs said: âWe donât allow single travellers on our family breaks unless they are linked to a booking where children are also on the break.â
âI was amazedâ
Malcom wanted to go during the week, which would have cost him ÂŁ75.
He was told he would be allowed to go on his own at a weekend, but this would set him back ÂŁ300.
Malcolm was only able to go on his own as his wife had had cancer for the last seven years so could not accompany him and his son had used up all his annual leave at work.
The pensioner said he did offer to pay a supplement but was told that was not possible.
He said he was also told if he did book for two people but the second person could not attend, he would be refused access.
Malcolm told BBC Radio Sussex: âI was amazed when I was told this.
âIâve been to Butlinâs before, even the Skegness one.
âI enjoy my trips to Butlinâs â the entertainment in the evening is good and a nice play to stay.
âI asked if they can waive the rules for older solo travellers but I was told no.â
A Butlinâs spokesperson added: âOur family breaks are the only ones that run midweek.â
Malcolm said he has now booked an alternative trip on his own.
