Saoirse Ronan has been trending in the headlines for her response to a joke related to self-defense. The actress made the statement while appearing alongside Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne, and Denzel Washington on The Graham Norton Show on October 25, 2024.
Redmayne was the one who started the topic by recalling the way he prepared himself for the new show, The Day of the Jackal, and referred to Paul by saying:
“I find some of the techniques that you learn, like things Paul taught us is how you can use your phone if someone’s attacking you. The b*tt of your phone to go over their neck.”
Paul Mescal jokingly stated in reply that no one would think of doing something like that and added:
“If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to ‘phone.'”
Mescal and Norton also did some actions pretending to take out their phone from their pockets and throw it at a random person. The host and everyone else began laughing at that point and while Redmayne was about to say something, Saoirse Ronan said in response:
“That’s what girls have to think about all the time.”
Ronan took a pause and Mescal, Redmayne, and Washington were seemingly not ready with an answer to the same. Ronan then continued and had a smile on her face after she said:
“Am I right ladies?”
This was followed by the audience clapping and cheering for Ronan. On the other hand, netizens shared their response to Ronan’s comments on different social media platforms, with most of them praising the way she replied. A user on X (formerly Twitter) also pointed to the silence that emerged out of Saoirse Ronan’s reply.
Saoirse Ronan addresses the need to support young actors in the entertainment industry
The Little Women star’s recent comment on The Graham Norton Show has received a lot of support from the public. Meanwhile, she addressed another topic as she spoke on the Awards Circuit Podcast of Variety on October 25.
She said during the conversation that young actors must be supported by their parents since the problem of getting exploited exists in the industry due to the presence of “directors who are incredibly manipulative.” She further stated:
“It’s fundamentally who a child is to want to please and never say no.”
Saoirse Ronan also had a message for all the young actors, where she advised them to approach her in case they need any help. She elaborated the same by saying:
“It’s a very lonely place, and it’s a very unnatural environment to grow up in. I just want young people to know they can always reach out. It’s important they have someone in their corner.”
The 30-year-old began her career on television where she was cast as Rhiannon Geraghty in The Clinic. She appeared in 2 films this year, starting with The Outrun. This was followed by the historical war drama, Blitz. She will share the screen with Jacob Anderson in the upcoming comedy thriller Bad Apples, which is helmed by Jonatan Etzler.
