âThe Fight Houseâ and âMeltdown in Oval Officeâ
Volodymyr Zelensky actually ended up in âThe Fight Houseâ when he went to visit Donald Trump at the White House, according to the Sunâs assessment of the extraordinary, bad-tempered scenes in the Oval Office on Friday. âTrump: No deal, get out,â reads one startling sub-header. Zelensky ârisking WW3â reads another. For the paper, Ukraineâs president was âambushedâ by the Trump administration as it pushed for a speedy end to the war between Ukraine and Russia.
âMake a deal or weâre out,â Trump is quoted as saying in the headline on the Daily Telegraph. There was a âshouting matchâ, the paper reports, as the US leader told Ukraineâs wartime leader: âCome back when youâre ready for peace.â Closer to home, the Matt cartoon looks at disruption to several banking apps on Friday, which was pay day for many in the UK. âI donât trust banking apps,â says one flat-capped man to his pal, over a pint in the pub. âWhat if they stop working when [Chancellor] Rachel Reeves urgently needs to access my cash?â
It is âShock and Warâ for the Daily Mirror as Trump âstuns world with vile rant at Zelenskyâ and âUkraine hero is forced home without a dealâ.
âMeltdown in Oval Officeâ declares the Times over photos of Zelensky and Trump arguing. âTrump tells Zelensky he is risking World War Three,â says one sub-header. âMake a deal or weâre out â and say thank you, demand Americans,â says another. The paper quotes Trump ally Elon Musk as saying on social media: âZelensky destroyed himself in the eyes of the American people.â
âZelenskyyâs White House talks break down in blaze of acrimonyâ reads the headline on the Financial Times over a picture of the Ukrainian and American leaders gesticulating towards each other. An analysis piece says the âspectacle will fill Kyivâs allies with horrorâ.
âShouting match in Oval Office,â reads the headline on the front page of the i paper. âTrump tries to humiliate Zelensky live on TV.â Another headline, this time about British politics, says Reform UK has overtaken both ruling Labour and the opposition Tories in an opinion poll for the paper.
For the Daily Express, Trump appears to have come off worst in Fridayâs sparring with Zelensky. âBust-up leaves Trumpâs peace talks in crisis,â its headline says.
For the Daily Mail, it was âA spectacle to horrify the worldâ. âRaging Trump humiliates Zelensky on live TV, accuses him of âgambling with WWIIIâ and kicks him out of the White House,â it says.
âStarmy loves nice beavers!â we are told by the Daily Star which reports that the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has âopened the doors to a big beaver boomâ. The toothy creatures will be released into the wild in England after the government approved their reintroduction. It is a âdam fine U-turnâ, the paper says.
